Ultrasound Fellowship at University of Illinois College of Medicine

The University of Illinois College of Medicine offers a one-year Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship at their Chicago campus, designed to develop leaders in ultrasound education both in academic and emergency department settings. The program is tailored to the unique goals of each fellow, whether they aim to become ultrasound directors, educators, or assume roles in both academic and community institutions. The fellowship focuses on ensuring fellows achieve high competency in their field, preparing them for various professional opportunities.

Curriculum and Learning Opportunities

The fellowship integrates several core components to provide comprehensive training. These include weekly Quality Assurance (QA) Sessions for reviewing and receiving feedback on point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) scans, didactic education through podcasts, webinars, and lectures, and hands-on pelvic ultrasound training, including an annual course hosted by UIC’s family medicine department. Additionally, fellows engage in the EM Ultrasound Journal Club, ultrasound scanning shifts with direct bedside teaching, and academic and research mentoring, which involves developing and executing a research project.

Fellows are expected to actively participate in emergency ultrasound research and are encouraged to submit abstracts and articles for publication. The program also offers unique opportunities like a two-year fellowship for those pursuing advanced degrees, combined fellowships in International and Resuscitation, and a longitudinal teaching scholars program. Graduates of the program will be eligible to take the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers certification exam.
